A third infant has died in Los Angeles County from whooping cough, which
has reached epidemic levels in California.

This year, 289 possible cases of pertussis - or whooping cough - have
been reported countywide, of which 184 are laboratory confirmed,
probable or suspected. For all of 2009, the corresponding number of
cases was 156.

Infants are especially vulnerable because they cannot be fully
vaccinated until they are 6 months old. All three local deaths were
infants younger than this age.

The county does not release information on where the infants lived.

The California Department of Public Health this week expanded its
vaccination recommendations to adults in hopes of stemming the spread of
the illness to children.

In addition to the usual series of childhood pertussis vaccinations,
state health officials now recommend an adolescent-adult pertussis
booster vaccine for anyone 7 and older who is not fully immunized,
including those who are more than 64 years old and women of
child-bearing age.

Pertussis is spread when an infected person coughs. Typical symptoms in
young children include intense coughing accompanied by a whooping sound,
and post-cough vomiting.

However, some infants infected with pertussis may not show typical
symptoms, but can still suffer life-threatening complications such as
pneumonia and seizures.

Among older children and adults, the primary symptom may be a cough that
often lasts for several weeks or longer.

Los Angeles County residents are encouraged to contact their regular
health care provider to arrange for recommended vaccinations.

Those who do not have a regular health care provider or insurance
coverage for vaccines may call 211 or visit
http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/ip for referrals to providers and
community sites offering immunizations free or at a reduced charge.

Chump American do-gooders should cherish the biological diversity.
Hopefully, some dedicated scientists are working on developing strains
of dangerous viral and bacterial varities that would focus on some
genetic element that would thin-out the mestizoes world-wide.
A blessing for all mankind and deserving of a Nobel prize.
