From: George Orwell on 7 Feb 2010 17:41 I'm calling for a boycott of Girl Scout Cookies. Summary: Child Labor in America Exploitation of children by the cookie-manufacturing corporation(s). Unethical selling practices Sub-standard cookies I'm getting sick and tired of seeing little girls peddling the so-called "Girl Scout" cookies all over the place. These girls should be in school getting a proper education, not peddling some corporation's cookies to make a buck for some organization to get a small cut in return. If this were going on in some other country, some American will be crying "Child Labor!". What makes it worse is that their parents get involved in the sales. In many corporations, parents of these little peddlers coerce co-workers to buy these cookies so that their cookie-peddling kids will look good on somebody's cookie sales chart. I've seen a high-level finance executive go round the I.T. department passing his little sheet around for cookie-purchase signups. Even low-paid mothers who work in the IT dept who have to try and sell cookies for their own kids for are buying this finance executive's kid's cookies!!! What the !@#$% And this corporation HAS regulations barring the sale of items by superiors to their subordinates (maybe that's why the finance executive peddles his stuff in the IT dept and not the finance dept?), that the damn HR department is afraid to enforce. I asked one of these mothers why she bought somebody else's cookies, and she said that everyone else was doing it, and not having her name on that list could mean getting laid-off at the next round of layoffs if the finance-executive had to start picking people. In another company, a middle manager left a cookie purchase signup sheet in the kitchen/coffee room. All her direct-reports signed up for purchases, even those with kids trying to sell the cookies! In case you have not realized it, this is how it works: if you don't buy your manager's kid's cookies, you may not get a good job performance review. The bonus resulting from a favorable performance review is far higher than the cost of 1 or 2 boxes of stupid cookies, so it makes sense to buy the damn cookies, right? i.e. its some kind of insurance against getting a bad performance review. When an executive in the company saw this happening, he decides to put up his kid's cookie signup sheet in the same room, next to the original. Now, everyone purchases on the executive's signup sheet as well! Double what the !@#$% Finally, the CEO (who has no kids) realizes what is happening, and orders the Executive and middle manager to cancel all sales and refund anyone who had made a payment. Yay! Do these Girl Scouts know how unethical the sale of their stupid cookies has become? And do these little girls who have been deceived into believing that hard work selling cookies on the street corners will pay off realize that they will never be able to meet the sales numbers of other girls whose parents have the ability to use "corporate muscle" to generate sales within the corporation? And lastly, these Girl Scout Cookies don't taste that good. The average cookies you can buy from the grocery store tastes better and is less expensive. Its about time we all stop buying these evil cookies and get these kids out of the street corners/outside grocery stores back into school to get a proper education. And its about time somebody files a class-action lawsuit against the cookie manufacturing corporation(s) who use Child Labor in America to peddle their products. It may be child labor, but hardly any worse than the chocolate bars schoolchildren are forced to peddle to pay for sports equipment, band instruments, art supplies, etc. While I normally don't buy Girl Scout cookies, I was pretty much forced to several years ago. I was smoking a bowl on my front porch when a fancy Jaguar pulled up and a snotty little rich girl got out and approached me. I was pretty sure she could smell the weed, so I bought three boxes just to make her happy so she wouldn't nark on me. Anyway, Girl Scout cookies go great with pot and milk. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = "Then there was the smart cookie who made her fortune peddling Girl Scouts." -- Unknown

Haven't had them in AGES! Too bad about the having to learn about marketing skills and all that. I know they don't always come in handy, but sometimes they do. Just like math.
From: TATTERFLY77 on 11 Feb 2010 14:45 From a mom of a girl scout who sells your so called evil cookies....... How does getting a parent to unethically generate sales within the workplace teach kids how to deal with the public? And when is your kid going to sell 1200 boxes, or $4800 in cookie sales, to win a laptop? :) This is how evil organizations deceive little kids. Maybe you should work harder and buy her a laptop (like many parents do) instead of telling her to peddle somebody's cookies to try and win some unrealistic "incentive". I am surprised the U.S. Labor Department hasn't stepped in and forced these evil organizations to pay at least the minimum hourly wage to these kids. And nobody should accept cookies from a stranger, even if the stranger is a kid.
