I can understand them wanting to do a C-section after induction of labor didn't work, but I bet the ultrasound showed that there was no baby either. That, and the small size of the uterus should have been a dead give away. Sherwin Nuland talked about the problem, pseudocyesis (false pregancy), in at least one of his books.
