Can you provide evidence that the vaccine is what got rid of smallpox?
Or is that just what most people believe and it must be true because
most people believe it?

According to the evidence in this book ...
http://www.whale.to/a/mcbean3.html

smallpox was on the decline before the vaccine was started. And there
is no evidence from the statistics that the vaccine helped.

Don't blame me; I'm just looking at the statistical evidence. You can
look it up yourself.

Sorry a better reference -if you wish to cite the opinions of a pig
farmer as scientific evidence.

Scopie's Law states:
“ In any discussion involving science or medicine, citing Whale.to as
a credible source loses you the argument immediately ...and gets you
laughed out of the room.
