This was by a mother who couldn't understand why her grown kids had
disowned her because their stepfather sexually abused them for years
and she chose to stay silent because he "might" have killed them had
she spoken up.

You may not believe the mother described in the first responding
letter - but more horrible stories than that have been in the news, so
it's believable enough.
